British MP tables motion to mark Anfal and attack on Halabja

London - UK (UK.KRG.org) - British MP Robert Halfon has tabled a motion in the British parliament marking the 23rd anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja in 1988 and the Anfal genocide campaign.

Robert Halfon MP is a Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Kurdistan Region in Iraq, which has recently returned from the fourth fact-finding mission in Iraqi Kurdistan. During the trip, the all-party group visited the Memorial in the city of Halabja, where over 5,000 people in 1988 were killed by poison gas by Saddam Hussein's regime.

Following the trip, British parliamentarians pledged to work towards having the genocide in Kurdistan recognised internationally, as it has been by the Iraqi parliament and Supreme Court.

The declaration, known as an early day motion, has been signed by two other MPs and others may do so as well. The motion states: "That this House notes that March 2011 marks the 23rd anniversary of the Anfal Genocide in Iraqi Kurdistan, including the massacre by chemical weapons of 5,000 people in Halabja on 16 March 1988; recognises and condemns the systematic slaughter of the Kurds by the Ba'athist regime under Saddam Hussein; regrets that almost 200,000 people were murdered and 4,500 villages destroyed; applauds the Iraqi Parliament and the Canadian Parliament for recognising these acts as genocide; and supports greater international recognition of the Anfal campaign as genocide." (EDM 1599).
